Growing into the Role: Learning from Kalina
What’s one habit that makes someone especially effective at this site
One habit that makes someone effective at this site is awareness/stepping in when they notice something is wrong. For example, if they notice the site coordinator having a hard time controlling the kids for an outdoor activity, they try stepping in and taking some of the kids. While this may take a while to adapt to, its important for volunteers to be able to adapt.
What’s something you’ve learned about working with this age group that you wish you knew when you first started?
Something she’s learned is that you have to be very persistent and patient. Kids will try to push you to get their way during an activity, but its important to be firm in your activity plan.
What is the habit, and how will I intentionally practice it during my next site visit?
One habit she’s trying to have is to be intentional with her sites. She tries to notice where her students are struggling the most, or what areas they haven’t really covered, then trying to incorporate that subject into the lesson plan in a fun, yet productive way.
