Shadowing Yazan

What is your role within MAPS and what decisions do you usually have to make in this role?

Yazan’s role is the high school site coordinator. Has to plan a different curriculum where he has to plan for 9th to 12th graders. He has to cater each of his lesson plans for the grade and skill levels. Each site has to have a different level of preparation to cater for each student. The twelfth graders and freshman both need to walk away from the site leaving like they benefited.

What makes it challenging?

The fact that Yazan has to plan for multiple different grades, scholarships, and college apps which can get very stressful. He has to weigh a ton of different factors every week to figure out how to efficiently cater to each grade level.

Create a fun, 10-minute icebreaker activity that helps new volunteers and students feel welcome.

Divide the site in pairs or into small groups where each person shares two true things about themselves and one goal (academic or personal). After a few minutes, ask for volunteers / students to share one interesting thing or goal they heard from someone else. This reinforces listening, affirmation, and MAPS’ academic mission without turning it into a lecture. It also breaks the ice between volunteers and students as they are able to relate to one another and ease into the site’s atmosphere.
