Week 4-Growing into the Role: Learning from Noor
Name: Noor
Position: External Student Success Coordinator
Brief description of role: Supports students at sites by tutoring and mentoring them, while also helping MAPS grow through volunteer recruitment and contributing to other tasks.
Main takeaways from the interview: The role balances providing consistent support to MAPS' growth and organizing posts all while emphasizing teamwork, community-building, and time management.
Shadow Assignment:
What skills or qualities do you wish interns developed most through this role?
She says interns should learn how to work effectively with students of different ages and backgrounds, tailoring their support to each student’s individual needs. She also says she wishes they develop teamwork skills, allowing them to become comfortable to rely on others and collaborate together to build a stronger, more supportive community. All of these skills are valuable both within MAPS and in other areas of life.
How do you balance supporting sites while also managing sustainability and growth for MAPS?
For her, balancing site support and MAPS growth involves focusing on consistent attendance at one site per week while also helping the organization expand by recruiting volunteers. Time management is important, as she must prioritize her classwork and other commitments, but going to site motivates her to get her work done. She uses tasks she finds enjoyable, like making posts, to stay engaged and productive while contributing to MAPS.
Using the skill/s they gave you, answer this question: Where have I already used this skill, and how does it show up differently at the site level vs. the organizational level?
I’ve already used skills like adapting my support to individual students and collaborating with others. At the site level, I adjust tutoring methods to meet specific student needs and I work closely with other interns to help students succeed. A tthe organizational level, I manage my time wisely and stay organized so I can consistently attend my weekly site and biweekly meetings while balancing other responsibilities like schoolwork.
